• First day of my life – Bright Eyes

This is the first day of my life
I swear I was born right in the doorway
I went out in the rain suddenly everything changed
They’re spreading blankets on the beach

Yours is the first face that I saw
I think I was blind before I met you
Now I dont know where I am
I don’t know where Ive been
But I know where I want to go

And so I thought Id let you know
    That these things take forever
    I especially am slow
But I realize that I need you
And I wondered if I could come home

Remember the time you drove all night
Just to meet me in the morning
And I thought it was strange you said everything changed
You felt as if you’d just woke up

And you said this is the first day of my life
Im glad I didnt die before I met you
But now I dont care I could go anywhere with you
    And Id probably be happy

So if you want to be with me
With these things theres no telling
We’ll just have to wait and see
But Id rather be working for a paycheck
Than waiting to win the lottery

Besides maybe this time is different
I mean I really think you like me

  • Hope There’s Someone – Antony & The Johnsons

He’s in a league of his own. Just listen.

    Hope there’s someone
    Who’ll take care of me
When I die, will I go

    Hope there’s someone
    Who’ll set my heart free
Nice to hold when I’m tired

There’s a ghost on the horizon
    When I go to bed
How can I fall asleep at night
How will I rest my head

Oh I’m scared of the middle place
    Between light and nowhere
I don’t want to be the one
Left in there, left in there

There’s a man on the horizon
Wish that I’d go to bed
If I fall to his feet tonight
    Will allow rest my head

So here’s hoping I will not drown
    Or paralyze in light
And godsend I don’t want to go
    To the seal’s watershed

    Hope there’s someone
    Who’ll take care of me
When I die, Will I go

    Hope there’s someone
    Who’ll set my heart free
Nice to hold when I’m tired

  • Brand New Start – Paul Weller

Brand New Start’ another great song by ‘the Modfather’ Paul Weller.

I’m gonna clear out my head
    I’m gonna get myself straight
I know it’s never too late
To make a brand new start

I’m gonna kick down the door
    I’m gonna get myself in
I’m gonna fix up the yard
    And not fall back again

I’m gonna clear up my earth
And build a heaven off the ground
Not something distant on a cloud
    But something real to me
    But something real to me

All that I can I can be
    All that I am I can’t see
All that is mine is in my hands
    So to myself I call

There’s somewhere else I should be
    There’s someone else I can’t see
There’s something more I can find
    There’s only love to me

I’m gonna clean up my earth
And build a heaven off the ground
Not something dsitant on a cloud
    But something real to me
    But something real to me

I’m gonna clean up my head
    I’m gonna get myself straight
I feel it’s never too late
To make a brand new start
To make a brand new start
To make a brand new start

  • Wild Wood – Paul Weller

Paul Weller ‘Wild Wood’ (1993) by ‘the Modfather’ Paul Weller. The amazing start of his third carreer.

    High tide, mid afternoon
People fly by, in the traffics boom
Knowing, just where you are blowing
Getting to where you should be going

Dont let them get you down
    Making you feel quilty about
golden rain, will bring you riches
All the good things you deserve and now

    Climbing, forever trying
Find your way out of the wild, wild wood
    Now theres no justice
Only yourself that you can trust in

And I said high tide, mid afternoon
People fly by, in the traffics boom
Knowing, just where you are blowing
Getting to where you should be going

Day by day your world fades away
Waiting to feel all the dreams that say
Golden rain will bring you riches
All the good things you deserve now

And I say, climbing, forever trying
find you way out of the wild, wild wood
Said you are gonna find you way out
    of the wild, wild wood
    Wild wild wood

  • Sweet Jane – Velvet Underground

Velvet Underground ‘Sweet Jane’ (1970) by the Velvet Underground. What else can I say?

Standing on the corner, suitcase in my hand,
Jack is in his coat, and Jane is her vest, and, me,
    I’m in a rock’n'roll band. Huh!
    Ridin’ in a Stutz-Bearcat, Jim
    Y’know, those were different times!
Oh, all the poet, they studied rules of verse,
And the ladies, they rolled their eyes.
Sweet Jane! Whoa! Sweet Jane, oh-oh-a! Sweet Jane!

    I’ll tell you something,
    Jack, he is a banker,
And Jane, she is a clerk.
Both of them save their monies, ha,
And when, when they come home from work!
Ooh! Sittin’ down by the fire, oh!
    The radio does play,
    The classical music there, Jim.
“The March of the Wooden Soldiers”.
    All you protest kids.
You can hear Jack say, get ready, ah,
Sweet Jane! Come on baby now! Sweet Jane! Oh-oh-a! Sweet Jane!

Some people, they like to go out dancing,
And other peoples, they have to work. Just watch me now!
And there’s even some evil mothers,
Well they’re gonna tell you that everything is just dirt.
Y’know that, women, never really faint,
And that villains always blink their eyes, woo!
And that, y’know, children are the only ones who blush!
And that, life is, just to die!
And, everyone who ever had a heart, oh,
That wouldn’t turn around and break it.
And anyone who ever played a part, whoa,
And wouldn’t turn around and hate it!

Sweet Jane! Whoa-oh-oh! Sweet Jane! Sweet Jane. Sweet Jane.
    Sweet Jane. Sweet Jane.

    Heavenly wine and roses,
Seems to whisper to her when he smiles. ah,
    Heavenly wine and roses,
Seems to whisper to her when he smiles. hey!
    la-la-la-la-la-la,
    la-la-la-la-la-la,
    la-la-la-la-la-la,
    la-la-la-la-la-la, oh
Sweet Jane! Sweet Jane! Sweet Jane! Sweet Jane! Sweet Jane!

  • Neil Young – Words (Between The Lines Of Ages)

Recently rediscovered this song from his “cross over” album Harvest (1972). The song has the feel of a one take recording, I think it is just that. Especially the guitar improvisation between the two verses is completly heartbreaking and sweeps me of my feet every time.
Want to hear it in a 30 minutes version played live by you know who.

Someone and someone were down by the pond
Looking for something to plant in the lawn.
Out in the fields they were turning the soil
Im sitting here hoping this water will boil
When I look through the windows and out on the road
They’re bringing me presents and saying hello.
Singing words, words between the lines of age.
Words, words between the lines of age.

If I was a junkman selling you cars,
Washing your windows and shining your stars,
Thinking your mind was my own in a dream
What would you wonder and how would it seem?
Living in castles a bit at a time
The king started laughing and talking in rhyme.
Singing words, words between the lines of age.
Words, words between the lines of age.

  • Slip slidin’ away – Paul Simon

Slip slidin’ away – Paul Simon

    Slip slidin’ away
    Slip slidin’ away
You know the nearer your destination
The more you’re slip slidin’ away

    I know a man
He came from my home town
He wore his passion for his woman
    Like a thorny crown
    He said Dolores
    I live in fear
My love for you’s so overpowering
I’m afraid that I will disappear

    Slip slidin’ away
    Slip slidin’ away
You know the nearer your destination
The more you’re slip slidin’ away

    I know a woman
    Became a wife
These are the very words she uses
    To describe her life
    She said a good day
    Ain’t got no rain
She said a bad day’s when I lie in bed
And think of things that might have been

    Slip slidin’ away
    Slip slidin’ away
You know the nearer your destination
The more you’re slip slidin’ away

    And I know a father
    Who had a son
He longed to tell him all the reasons
    For the things he’d done
    He came a long way
    Just to explain
He kissed his boy as he lay sleeping
Then he turned around and headed home again

    Slip slidin’ away
    Slip slidin’ away
You know the nearer your destination
The more you’re slip slidin’ away

    God only knows
    God makes his plan
    The information’s unavailable
    To the mortal man
    We work our jobs
    Collect our pay
Believe we’re gliding down the highway
When in fact we’re slip slidin’ away

    Slip slidin’ away
    Slip slidin’ away
You know the nearer your destination
The more you’re slip slidin’ away

  • Working Class Hero – John Lennon

    From “Plastic Ono Band”, in my opinion his best album, where the so-called ‘primal scream’ therapy is very evident comes the hard hitting;

Working Class Hero – John Lennon

As soon as you’re born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you’re clever and they despise a fool
Till you’re so fucking crazy you can’t follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they’ve tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can’t really function you’re so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you’re so clever and class less and free
But you’re still fucking peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There’s room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

  • Five Years – David Bowie

“Five Years” by Bowie from the Ziggy Stardust album is another off my all time favorite popsongs.

    Five Years – David Bowie

Pushing thru the market square, so many mothers sighing
News had just come over, we had five years left to cry in
News guy wept and told us, earth was really dying
Cried so much his face was wet, then I knew he was not lying
I heard telephones, opera house, favourite melodies
I saw boys, toys electric irons and T.V.’s
My brain hurt like a warehouse, it had no room to spare
I had to cram so many things to store everything in there
And all the fat-skinny people, and all the tall-short people
And all the nobody people, and all the somebody people
I never thought I’d need so many people

A girl my age went off her head, hit some tiny children
If the black hadn’t a-pulled her off, I think she would have killed them
A soldier with a broken arm, fixed his stare to the wheels of a Cadillac
A cop knelt and kissed the feet of a priest, and a queer threw up at the sight of that

I think I saw you in an ice-cream parlour, drinking milk shakes cold and long
Smiling and waving and looking so fine, don’t think
you knew you were in this song
And it was cold and it rained so I felt like an actor
And I thought of Ma and I wanted to get back there
Your face, your race, the way that you talk
I kiss you, you’re beautiful, I want you to walk

We’ve got five years, stuck on my eyes
    Five years, what a surprise
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got
We’ve got five years, what a surprise
Five years, stuck on my eyes
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got
We’ve got five years, stuck on my eyes
    Five years, what a surprise
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got
We’ve got five years, what a surprise
We’ve got five years, stuck on my eyes
We’ve got five years, my brain hurts a lot
Five years, that’s all we’ve got
    Five years
    Five years
    Five years
    Five years

  • Close Watch – John Cale

For some 20 years I have been listening to his music.
If you ever get the chance you must go see John Cale. Especially his solo concerts are so intense and strong it makes most others look like weak imitators.

(I Keep A) Close Watch – John Cale

    Never win and never lose
    There’s nothing much to choose
    Between the right and wrong
    Nothing lost and nothing gained
Still things aren’t quite the same
    Between you and me

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine

I still hear your voice at night
When I turn out the light
    And try to settle down
But there’s nothing much I can do
Because I can’t live without you
    Any way at all

I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
I keep a close watch on this heart of mine
